The PGA Tour announced that the World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions, scheduled for Oct. 29-Nov. 1, has been canceled. The WGC, which offered a purse of $10.25 million, was expected to be played at Sheshan International Golf Club in Shanghai, China. Those plans were scratched after consultation with the China Golf Association following a July announcement and guidelines issued by the General Administration of Sports of China, which declared that it will not stage any international sports for the rest of the year, apart from trials for the 2022 Winter Olympic. The news of the event’s cancellation comes a few hours after the 2020 Zozo Championship was moved from Japan to Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks, California, as a result of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The Zozo will be played Oct. 22-25, the week before the WGC was scheduled. via Golfweek
And there it is, the official cancellation of the HSBC Champions. In what was one of worst-kept secrets on tour, the Chinese government has officially put the axe on all sporting events for 2020. With the event supposed to be taking place in Shanghai, the WGC and PGA decided to cancel the event.
Honestly, this really sucks. One of the best parts about the WGC is that you get to see the best golfers from around the world. Guys who some of us rarely see from the European Tour make their way to compete with PGA contingent. The WGC has done a great job cultivating rivalries and exciting moments, so to see it have one of their tournaments cancelled is terrible.
Once again, 2020, you continue to disappoint.
