One name that we haven't heard very often over the past fews years is Martin Kaymer. The former world number one had an awful season in 2015, losing his PGA Tour membership and retreating back to the European Tour. Six years after his triumphant US Open victory at Pinehurst No. 2, Kaymer is still looking to get back in the winner's circle.
Since 2016, Kaymer has been back over in Europe playing on the European Tour. Though he has had some success, He hasn't cracked the top 20 of the Race to Dubai since 2016, finishing in 68th place during the 2019. It seemed like Kaymer could become just another great golfer whose time was behind him.
That is, of course, until the 2020 season. The COVID-shortened season has been a bit of a mess over in Europe, but Kaymer has been playing incredibly consistent golfer. In his 8 starts, he has made 6 cuts and have finished those 6 tournaments in the top 20. Over the past 2 weeks, Kaymer finished T3 at the UK Championships and solo 2nd at the Andalucia Masters. A pretty decent last two weeks!
Next week, Martin returns to the US Open at Winged Foot. While he had a decent showing last year with a T35 finish, he unfortunately did not have a great first major, missing the cut by a mile at the PGA Championship. I think that with this major boost in confidence over the past few weeks, I could see him coming over to Long Island and having a nice little tournament. Hopefully, we get to see the ball-striking monster that we all remember from the early 2010's!
